Alienware
Hello all. I was going to search for this, because I know other threads have come up, but searching is disabled at the moment.
The screen on my current laptop suddenly died, apparently a common problem for sony vaio users, and if it costs too much to fix, I might be looking for a new computer. I was looking at the alienware notebook Area-51 m7700. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with alienware, and whether you like them, or are they worth it. Any feedback would help. I know that for a gaming computer I should get a desktop, but I really like the ability to take my computer where ever I go. Also if any of you know about any laptops you think are better than the alienware, please let me know. Thanks.

I just bought an $11,000 desktop from them. I love it.
How much do you want to spend? If price isn't an issue Alieware is prolly the best you can find. If price is an issue well then you have to decide what exactly you want.

Rock's got a notebook with SLI and a 19" screen...
That's not a joke, but I dunno if you can get it in the US.
In the US, I think Alienware may be your best bet, but act fast, scuttlebutt has that they're being bought by Dell...

They are being bought by Dell. Generaly speaking though there is nothing that a high end computer dealer like Alienware can build you that you can't build yourself or have built for significantly less money so long as you are willing to do the research. Personally I despise laptops because of all the proprietary miniaturized components that make upgrades aggravating if not impossible. Desk tops are more future proof. Now not knocking the guy with the 11 grand desktop but that same computer could have been built with the same parts for about half that with a little deal hunting and elbow grease. I could take 11 grand and build a system that could stomp an Alienware into the ground. If you are dead set on a lap top then nothing I say will dissuade you but I'd definately say that a desktop will serve you better in the long run and that if you go for a desktop you would be better off building it yourself or buying the components and having someone else put the build labor into it. You'll come out cheaper on a top end system that way.

Yah. I could have made the computer but I had the money and felt like splurging without having to do it all. But if you want to save money build it yourself. If it doesn't matter buy one. Its easier. And I seriously doubt you could make a better comp than the one I just got. You coudl equal it for a lot less money but making a better one would be very hard, the price was that high because I seleted all top of the line parts and it has quad screens.

Dell sucks. I hate the fact that they are buying Alienware. It makes them even MORE mainstream than they were.

Well thanks for the replies. I think you are right in saying that you can't disuade me from buying a laptop. The one I am considering getting is on the higher end at around $3500.00. For another two thousand, I could have a ridiculously great sound system, and CPU. But, I can't believe you payed $11,000 for a computer. That blows my mind.

my 4,200 dollar alienware is a piece of crap compared to what i could have gotten for the same ammount custom built, but my dad dint want to help assemble it, the butthead. ah well. i dont think it even has the latest technology for hardware upgrades (ports, slots & the like) so i'm wondering what the hell i'm going to do when all the new games come out that need a better graphics card than a geforce 6800 and a crappy 1.5 year old amd 64 cpu that overheats my whole ROOM occaisionally.

Dell doesn't "suck". A statement like that without reason or knowledge on the matter is pretty silly.

Hmm...My Dell seems to work fine. It isn't perfect...what is? However, it is very stable, quiet, and most importantly...FAST! The BTX Case design keeps it quiet and running cool. You never see me with major tweaking errors/problems/etc...ever.
